Sun Safe City's Pilot Program Receives EPA Award

In May 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the first annual Sun Wise Awards which were presented to two categories of schools for their efforts in teaching sun safe behaviors to prevent skin cancer, cataracts, and other health effects caused by overexposure to the sun. The HELIOS awards recognzied the three top schools nationally for their work changing school policy, involving parents and the community, creating shade structures on school playgrounds and/or allowing sunscreen to worn in school period. The 2003 HELIOS Award winners were the MERRYHILL SCHOOL in Davis, CA, the Bryon A. Barry Elementary in Phoenix, Az and the Center for Creative Learning in St. Louis, Mo. 
Media Coverage
The efforts at Merryhill have not gone unnoticed by the media. In addition to coverage of Merryhill’s activities in the Davis Enterprise and by local Channel 3 and Channel 10, the Sun Safe City Program’s involvement with the Merryhill hat program was mentioned in the USA Today.; The Sun Safe City Program was recognized by the Sacramento Sierra Medical Society, and was the recipient of their annual Community Action award in January, 2003.
